Three police officers lost their lives and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation occurred as police and firefighters entered the house close to the city of Verona to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female got detained at the scene and one more individual who fled subsequent to the blast was apprehended shortly later. The trio have been taken to medical facility.

The detonation could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the area showed the property turned into a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The head of the Veneto area, the regional head, explained the residence was under an court order due to debts accrued by the three owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings triggered the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Claudio Papagno informed news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our officers,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the property, the minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the incident included 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official was convinced the blast had happened on a level above the access point and informed the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to local news, adding that the family members had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
