The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
An iconic resort island located on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has built in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment noting they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is developed, including a substantial array of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.

The acquiring firm also owns hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
